Sweet and Sour Chicken Recipe

Skip takeout and make this tangy, and flavorful sweet and sour chicken at home! Coated in a light, golden batter and tossed in a homemade sweet and sour sauce, this dish is perfect for dinner and pairs well with steamed rice or fried rice.


Ingredients

For the Chicken:

  • 2 large chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ⅓ cup rice vinegar or white vinegar
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped

Instructions

1. Prepare the Chicken

  1. In a bowl, mix cornstarch, flour, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Dip each chicken piece into the beaten eggs, then coat in the flour mixture.
  3. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat and fry chicken until golden brown . Remove and drain on a paper towel.

2. Make the Sweet and Sour Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, combine ketchup, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and brown sugar over medium heat.
  2. Stir in pineapple chunks and bell peppers. Simmer for 2 minutes.
  3. Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens.

3. Combine & Serve

  1. Toss the chicken in the sweet and sour sauce until well coated.
  2. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.
  3. Garnish with green onions or sesame seeds (optional).
